Why We Must Die to Self

We die to self to experience the profound power of the gospel.

Start with Scripture

Romans 5:8 summarizes the gospel message and establishes Christ’s love for us.  What did He do for us?  What had we done for Him?

Examine Philippians 2:6-8.  Christ modeled how to deny self and trust the Father.  He did not consider himself equal to God but made himself in the form of man.  In what ways did Christ deny Himself in pursuit of us?

Read Luke 9:23-25.  What does Jesus mean when he says, “take up your cross daily”?  What is at stake for choosing to cling to your own will and your own way?

In Ephesians 4:17-23.  Paul talks about putting off the old man and putting on the new.   Paul’s imperative verbiage “putting on/off” requires action on our part.  What is required to put on the new self?  Note the new self is not something you create, it is something already prepared and given to you.  Describe the new self.

Personal Reflections

The Gospel is not meant to be a one-time acceptance; neither is the task of dying to self.  Discuss how dying to self and the revelation of the Gospel are linked together for sanctification and why it must be done daily.

In Philippians, you discussed what it looked like for Christ to humble himself in obedience to the point of death.  These are the instructions for dying to our will.  What keeps us from fully accepting this charge?

Do you find yourself grieving the loss of your way?  What does this self-centered worldview offer you?

The Gospel Approach

What Jesus has done trumps everything.  By dying to our life plan, we are reaching forward to the eternal hope of Christ.  Read Romans 6:8-10.  We are alive in Christ, the conqueror and victor of sin. What does the gospel truly mean for you?

Read Philippians 3:7-10.  Paul spoke of his own loss for the pursuit of the gospel.  He considered it all rubbish to gain Christ.  This isn’t achieved through legalism or law, but our faith in what Christ has already done.   Discuss the difference in having a head knowledge of Christ and experiencing Christ and the power of His resurrection through daily pursuit of Him.

Read John 12:24-26 and consider Christ’s sacrifice as the “grain of wheat”.  What did his death signify for all those who believe?  If the fruit of his death and resurrection has led to abundant, fruitful life for us, what is the result of our own daily death for the harvest of more for His glory?
