Contentment

Wanting what we have NOT having what we want

Start with Scripture

(In the following verses the words content, satisfied, sufficient, or adequacy are used with the idea of “self-sufficiency” that comes from Christ. In Christ alone we are content.)

Read Philippians 4:8-13. According to 4:8 what are we to think about?  God will give us godly role models for an example of how to remain steadfast in our faith.  How did Paul achieve contentment?

In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 why would we be content/sufficient in our weaknesses?

Read 1 Timothy 6:6-11. What is the relationship between godliness and contentment? Describe the contrast in attitude and heart motive in 6:9-11.

What is the promise in Hebrews 13:5? Do you believe it? Has it made a difference in the way you live out your life of faith in Christ Jesus?

Personal Reflections

1.  Have you considered it is not whatI need but WHOI need to be content?  How can you “learn” to be content?

2. In what area of weakness have you seen the power/sufficiency of Christ in your own life or in the life of another?

3.  What does it mean to “boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me?”(2 Corinthians 12:9)

The Gospel approach to learning contentment

1.  Why is it so difficult to achieve and to maintain an attitude of contentment?  According to Galatians 5:16-17 what is the struggle between wanting what we have and having what we want?

2.  How will you let the body of Christ hold you accountable to an action plan that will allow you to “think on these things” mentioned in Philippians 4:8 to counteract the desires of the flesh?

3.  If it is not what we need but WHOwe need then how does John 3:30 apply when John the Baptist states “He must increase, but I must decrease”?

4. In Philippians 4:11 Paul states that he “learned” to be content.  What does this look like for you? Read Colossians 3:1-2.  How do you practically apply this in your personal situation?
