Knowing God’s Will

Yes!!! Knowing Godʼs will is both a desire AND a reality. Our life experiences typically demand seasonal adjustments between long hard winters which reflect difficult circumstances and the welcome of spring which brings hope and renewal. We CAN know the will of God in every season of life.

Start with Scripture

Romans 12:1-2 What are we to offer and to whom? How are we to be transformed? What does this testing result in knowing?

1 Thessalonians 4:1-4 Is there a correlation between how we live and what pleases God?What is specifically stated to be the will of God in this passage?

1 Thessalonians 5:12-20 What instructions are given to believers in this passage? What is the specific stated will of God in verse 5:18? Could any of these instructions be considered Godʼs will?

Personal Reflections

Do you renew your mind, Romans 12:2, in order to become more like Christ and to discern that which is good, acceptable and perfect? If this reflects Godʼs will then how would you define what is good, acceptable and perfect?

Romans 13:14 What is the will of the Father in this verse? Who are we to represent? What are some fleshly desires that you may struggle with that would not reflect the character of Christ?

When we become more familiar with the character of God then perhaps we are more equipped to discern Godʼs will “...for such a time as this?” Although our spouse, career or where we live are important choices is it possible Godʼs will has more to do with clothing ourselves in Christ?

The Gospel Approach

1 Thessalonians 4:3 and 5:18 state that Godʼs will is for our sanctification, to be set apart for His purpose, and for us to be thankful in all things. In what areas of your life do you need to be set apart from the world and to choose to be grateful for what God is doing in all circumstances?

In John 4:34 Jesus said his food is to do the will of the One who sent Him and to accomplish His work. If it is our desire to know and to be in Godʼs will then we have to “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ. What “food” do we need to take in for spiritual nourishment? Read Jeremiah 15:16.

If we do not find Godʼs words to delight our heart then our minds might be focused more on the world than His Word. Knowing God and His Word is how we discern Godʼs will and we CAN experience it as a reality in every season of life.
