Who Am I?

Start with Scripture

We have a physical genealogy and a spiritual one as well. Jesus was explaining to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews, that in order to see the kingdom of God one must be “born again”. According to John 3:3-7 how did Jesus distinguish between a physical birth and a spiritual birth?

According to 1 Peter 1:23 what differentiates between being born of the flesh and of the Spirit? Read 1 Peter 1:3. Who is responsible for our spiritual birth and how do we experience a “living hope”?

John 1:12 clearly states who has the right to become children of God. In whose name do you believe? Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. How is being “born again” described? What transformation has occurred?

Personal Reflections

Read Galatians 2:20. Who has been crucified and with whom? Who is now alive in me?How do I now live out my life in the “flesh” according to this verse?

What is the motive of my heart for what I do, where I serve or how I relate to people?

According to Galatians 5:17 the desires of the Spirit and the desires of the flesh are competing for control. In what visible ways do I demonstrate this ongoing battle in my mind and in my conduct?

The Gospel Approach

Read 1 John 2:3-5. Describe a new creation in Christ and how we know that we are “in Him”.

Do I choose to obey the commands of Christ as evidence of my belief in His name?

John 15:10-17. In what way was Jesus an example for us to be obedient to His commands? What affectionate term does Jesus use to describe those who obey His commands?

The word “abide” means to continue to be present and to remain as one. In John 15:1-9 Jesus explains that HE is the true vine and we, believers in Christ, are the branches. Why is it important for the branch to remain in the vine? What can the branch do apart from the vine?

How special are you according to John 15:16? Is this a new concept for you? Do you feel worthy? According to Godʼs Word no one is righteous, no not one, Romans 3:10. God is full of amazing grace!

Colossians 3:5-14 describes what behavior, sin, a Christian is to put aside. Describe which behaviors and attitudes are sinful and of the flesh that we are to put aside. This scripture also states that our “new self” will reflect the characteristics of Christ. As a new creation please describe what we are to put on.

In light of these scriptures are you able to confidently and boldly answer the question “Who am I”?

Are you living and walking in the flesh or in the spirit? Please read Galatians 5:24-26.
