Be Intentional

Start with Scripture

Is there a biblical application for being on high alert to set ourselves apart from that which is detrimental to our spiritual well-being?

Read 2 Timothy 2:1-7. Paul instructs Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Jesus Christ.  What does a good soldier of Jesus Christ endure? As a soldier is involved in warfare what must be avoided and why? If an athlete is to win a prize what must he do? Which farmer ought to have the crops? According to 2:7 who gives us understanding of the written Word?  As a believer who has enlisted you and why?

Read Psalm 115:3 and make note of where God is and what He does. If we are to imitate God does that mean we can do whatever pleases us? According to Micah 6:6-8 there is a contrast with bringing offerings to the Lord and doing what pleases the Lord? What are the choices and which one will you choose?

Personal Reflections

In order to be intentional in our desire to bring pleasure to the Lord we have looked at selected Scripture that has defined what is required. According to these verses what do you find is most challenging to intentionally lay aside that could contaminate your relationship with the Lord?

Psalm 46:10(ESV) says to “Be still and know that I am God...” and in the NASB it says “Cease striving and know that I am God...” The intended meaning in Hebrew was to relax, sink down and withdraw.  What does being still look like for you? Is it disengaging from activity and being mindless or is it an intentional training of the heart to listen to the Lord speak through His Word instead of you doing the talking?

Again, reflecting on 2 Timothy 2:1-7 as a soldier of Jesus Christ, as an athlete and hardworking farmer what do you need to intentionally lay aside in order to be pleasing to the Lord and receive the prize?

Read Ephesians 5:1-21. If it is your ambition to please the Lord, Ephesians 5:1, 2, 10 clearly state that we are to imitate God, to walk in love as Christ loved us and to discern what pleases the Lord. Within 5:1-21 you will see children of light contrasted with those who walk in darkness.  Describe the choices and conduct to pursue for His pleasure.  Prayerfully consider any areas of conduct that you need to lay aside in order to be an imitator of God

The Gospel Approach

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now life in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” What a mighty God we serve! Does this describe you and the way you live out your life in the flesh?   What choices must you intentionally make to protect yourself from spiritual contamination in order to live out the gospel and experience more of Jesus and less of you? How will this impact the body of Christ and unbelievers?

Colossians 1:10 “so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him...”  Examine your heart to discern the disciplines you have cultivated for His pleasure.  What attitudes or conduct do you need to intentionally nourish to walk in a manner that is worthy of the Lord? (Scripture reading, Bible study, prayer, serving, worship, encouraging others, gratitude and thanksgiving, eliminate busyness and restrict time on electronics, taking thoughts captive...)

May our prayer be in the words of Jesus, John 17:3-4 “And this is eternal life that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ...I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do”.
