What is a Spiritual Gift?

WHO gives the gift, HOW and WHY is it received

Start with Scripture

Read 1 Corinthians 12:1-7.  Define spiritual gifts according to 1 Corinthians 12:7. What do you think the word “manifestation” means in the context of spiritual gifts? Why is it important to God that we understand spiritual gifts?

According to Romans 12:4-8 we are individually members one with another but our gifts differ from one another,  “according to the grace given to us”.  Why would God through His grace choose to gift us differently?  Are these gifts intended to be exercised?

Read 1 Peter 4:10-11.  Who has received at least one spiritual gift? Do you believe that you have at least one spiritual gift?  What are you to do with it and how are you to use it?

In Ephesians 4:11-12 Paul mentions different gifts that are given to the church.  For what purpose does God assign these spiritual gifts?

Personal Reflections

Are your natural gifts and talents the same as your spiritual gifts? Does God integrate the natural talents He has given us with the spiritual gifts He chooses for us to use in the body of Christ?

The 1 Corinthian 12:1-7 passage clearly states there are a variety of gifts, service and activities but One Spirit, One Lord, One God who “empowers them all in everyone”. How do I determine my spiritual gift and area of service?

According to 1 Peter 4:10-11 spiritual gifts will be used either in speaking or in serving.  In reference to serve the body of Christ what is my greatest passion? What area of ministry do I enjoy and receive positive affirmation that I am serving well? In what area of service do my brothers and sisters in Christ specifically encourage me to serve?

The Gospel Approach

What if I do not use my spiritual gift? What significance does this have to relational stewardship?

Ephesians 2:8-10.  Spiritual gifts are a gift of grace from God.  Our salvation is also a precious gift of grace that is through faith and not of ourselves just as spiritual gifts are supernatural and not of our own talent or strength.  According to Ephesians 2:10 we are God’s workmanship. What were we created for? When was this planned and what should we do? Is there a correlation with our spiritual gifts?

In 1 Corinthians 12:12-20 Paul describes the various members of the body and the importance of each member and its function as it contributes to the health of the entire body.

What is my action plan to be aware of my spiritual gifts and how to use them for God’s glory?
